Three people were killed and four were injured in a fire at an illegally subdivided house in Queens early Saturday morning, according to the New York Times.

Two men died at the scene and a third, who was in cardiac arrest, died at Elmhurst Hospital Center.

Nov. 7--LAWRENCE -- Fire roared through a part of the abandoned Merrimac Paper Co. complex on South Canal Street last night, illuminating the southern bank of the Merrimack River with an orange glow that burned late into the night.

The blaze was first reported shortly before 7 p.m. and quickly escalated to three alarms.

Nov. 7--LONG BEACH -- A fire Friday at a home on LaRosa Road gutted the residence, injured a firefighter and claimed the lives of the homeowners' three dogs.

Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Dubuisson said firefighter Tim Harrison suffered a first-degree burn to his neck while battling the blaze at 195 LaRosa around 11 a.m. Harrison was taken to a hospital for treatment of the injury, which Dubuisson said was believed to be minor.

Indianapolis fire investigators blame the cold weather for a rash of blazes set at abandoned homes.

Firefighters have responded to 20 such fires in the last month, the latest Friday night on the city's east side. Capt. Rita Reith said all of the blazes were likely set by homeless trying to stay warm.

"They'll use whatever available materials they have, whether it's newspaper clothing, a mattress that's left by somebody else, wood from outside.

Nov. 7--CARIBOU, Maine -- The former deputy chief of the Island Falls Fire Department was indicted Friday by the Aroostook County grand jury on a theft charge in connection with the alleged misappropriation of about $10,000 in town funds.

Aroostook County District Attorney Neale Adams said Friday afternoon that Paul A. Breton II of Island Falls was one of 55 people indicted by the grand jury.

Nov. 6--WILSON -- Dozens of firefighters remained on the scene this morning, dousing the smoldering remains of the historic Wilson Opera House and two other buildings.

The fire was reported at about 2:35 a.m. today, when Wilson Police Chief Mike Schoenfer received a call that a passing motorist had noticed embers in the area.

When he arrived, a structure known as the Johnson building was engulfed in flames.

Naperville fire crews have yet to determine the cause of a midday blaze Thursday at the commercial warehouse of Odermath Inc. at 1651 Frontenac Road.Fire units arrived on the scene and located a fire in a machine that had spread to a conveyor belt system and the building's ventilation system, Naperville Fire Chief Richard Mikel said in a release.
