Huskerkill: Kordell Stewart
Not long ago, the Big Red Network ran a series on Husker Killers – opposing players that killed Nebraska. In the spirit of equal time for the Scarlet and Cream, we now present Huskerkill – players that got ran over by Nebraska.
No player comes to mind as quickly when you think of Husker victims than former Colorado quarterback Kordell Stewart. In three games, Kordell went 0-3, was limited to 23 completions out of 64 passing attempts, with 3 interceptions and 282 and no touchdowns.
Round 1 was only spot duty for Stewart in a 52-7 mudhole stomping of the Buffaloes in Lincoln. It was particularly sweet in that the Huskers had gone 0-2-1 in the past three games against CU and hadn’t beaten a top ten team in almost four years. The Huskers unveiled their new 4-3 defensive alignment and dismantled the Buffs in short order. Stewart went 3-8 for a meager 17 passing yards that day.
Round 2 in Boulder, the Huskers got out to a quick 21-3 first quarter lead before the CU defense stiffened and kept NU from adding to that margin. The Buffs rallied to within 21-17 behind two Rashaan Salaam touchdown runs, but the Blackshirts made Stewart the goat as he was intercepted three times on the day and completed only 8 of 28 passes for 115 yards.
Round 3 was memorable for a number of reasons. It was a match-up of two of the top three ranked teams in the country and the first to feature Huskervision. It was also a day where the Blackshirts were perfect in shutting down the Buffs on third and fourth down conversions (going a combined 0-15). Aside from a single touchdown drive, CU was held scoreless all day. Stewart ran for his life (amassing only 24 yards on 14 attempts) and was thoroughly beaten physically and mentally. He left the field with Adidas tracks up and down his back. The quintessential piece of Huskerkill.

Where is the video???????? You showed video of players making us look bad. How about some more video to get us pumped up for the summer?

We've mined youtube for that stuff, and unfortunately, nobody's downloaded much of Kordell getting crushed by the Huskers. This clip has a still image at about the 1:35 mark:
And this one has a lot of the 1992 game (but you don't see Stewart until about 7:23).
Enjoy!

Fair 'nuff. I haven't found any specific highlights of Stewart, but this video from the '95 season should bring back some good memories.

Didn't the Blackshirts punch Marcus Dupree in the mouth as well?
Thanks,

I sure miss Tommie. Thanks for the videos. Did you see the subsequent video about Herbstreit and his whining? Funny.

Whoa, I can hardly wait for the return of the Blackshirts under the 'BO-urne Supremacy'!

One of the more misinformed, out of school comments I've read, regarding that period, was a national writer referring to Tommie as a "poor man's Kordell Stewart."
The most accurate comment was by Terry Donahue, who said Tommie was a "Michael Jordan type difference maker." As different as left and right, with those perceptions.
I'm sure that writer is still being paid to write, somewhere...
Remember Buffy's offensive set, in '94? Designed by Rick Neuheisel, is was supposed to be the answer to Nebraska's 4-3. Supposedly, that was their offense, just to beat Nebraska. A one back, (Salaam) with with two tight ends lined outside and the wr's inside like flankers at each end.
Another amusing comment was from Buffy's coach, Bill McCartney, who asked the rhetorical, "let's see how well Brooke does when his tight ends are covered and he has to throw to his split ends."
An amazing season, '94. Too bad Nebraska couldn't play Penn st. But, it wasn't Nebraska's fault they joined the Big Ten.

The pre-game show prior to game 3 was all Colorado. Super quarterback coach 'Spanky', Super quarterback Cordell. Nebraska wasn't given much mention. The announcers became more and more numb as the game progressed. Media golden boy 'Spanky' never did beat TO. One year, perhaps that one, the Colorado football team entered the stadium by pouring out of the top of the stadium and running down onto the field. After the game a media guy asked one of the Husker players what he thought about the flamboyant Colorado entrance. He answered with words to the effect of "Coach Osbourne told us they may have a gimicky entrance. He said a team that does that is usually scared."
