Lego Airbus A380 Is Biggest Lego Aeroplane in the World
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:10 AM on June 21, 2008
Behold the biggest Lego aeroplane in the world, made after the largest passenger aeroplane in the world, the Airbus A380. Made at a 1:25 scale-2.9 metres long, 3.2-metre wingspan98 cms tall—the Lego A380 uses 220 pounds (100kg) of bricks. That's a mindblowing 75,000 pieces in eight colours—15 Lego Millennium Falcons. With that amount of bricks, and knowing how long my Falcon is taking, I'm not surprised that it took 600 hours for the entire team of professional Legoland model builders to assemble this beast. It's cool and big and Lego and all... and has that physical pixel art feel going for it, but I have to admit that I prefer the models that look like an actual person designed them while sitting in front of a bucket of bricks to those that look more like "computer, output this CAD file in Lego format, please".

Speaking of Lego Millennium Falcons, did you ever finish yours Jesus? I remember the postings where you started it but I don't ever remember seeing the finished product. Saw one at a new Lego store here in Phoenix, they had a bunch on the shelf and I was seriously tempted.
On topic, this is the craziest thing I've ever seen, I cannot even imagine what went into putting this together!

@Nintenboy01:
It's probably at least partially hollow with a welded steel armature inside. I never realized they did that until I saw a series of photos of a couple LEGO Masterbuilders building a huge Naboo Starfighter at one of the Star Wars Celebrations, and basically they had the whole thing planned out ahead of time to the point where they were able to pre-fabricate a steel armature that they could build around. There's a minimum wall thickness that they shoot for to keep the sides from caving in (at least 4 studs?), and the wings are probably solid construction over the armature, but it would be a waste of bricks to pack the main fuselage like that.
@Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!:
It's not completely outside the realm of possibility, but short of winning the lottery she might have to give up buying any regular sets for a while. There are people out there who have spent up to ten years accumulating the parts necessary to build a single super-scale model like that. I have neither the patience nor the budget to do so myself, but it takes all sorts.
@Wakeley:
Oh, if they build it for display, they _always_ glue the parts. Otherwise you risk having catastrophic collapse destroy the whole thing. They bricks have some serious clutch power compared to some of the cheaper clone brands, but even they have load limits. That and it keeps people from walking off with "souvenir" bricks.

@Kaiser-Machead's Chips Ahoy!:
You are totally right Kaiser! Sorry I am late to the party, but I had a long family day. This is awesome. I love how the minifigs look to scale with the plane! You know with the price of homes these days, Maybe one day I really will live in a home made of LEGO. At least I know I wont have to call a repair man if a roof tile falls off! But I must say, The mattress and couch would have *not* be LEGO. And yes, Kaiser, Chips Ahoy, yummy....very, I know personally ;-)
@Purple Dave:
Um no Mr. Dave. FYI, I'm working on a bunch of original stuff as some people might know. As for new sets, I got a new Mars Mission with the new Alien Commander Minifig today, and her quite cool. And the moment the new Bionicle Mistica (spelling?) sets come out I shall have them. I am a mini-fig aficionado, and even thought the vast vast majority of Bionicle sets have no minifigs, I cannot resist how cool they are. Already have the new death star on pre-order, gonna pre-order the new Castle Chess set the minute I can, and I will have oh so many of the upcoming Clone Wars sets. Lucky me, I have plenty of money to spend on LEGO, Apple Stuff, others gadgets, and shoes clothes and bags.....

Anything taken to this extreme is insane. Build a few legos, here and there, buy a macbook and an ipod... it's all good. 600 hours? You best be gettin paid for that shit. Why anyone would find some kind of personal satisfaction from that, I have no fucking clue. I appreciate passion in life, but when you're just dropping money and have no other purpose in life than to be a mindless consumer, groping for the next, coolest thing... wake the fuck up people. I loved legos when I was a kid, I truly feel I owe much of my creativity to them, but I'm really trying hard here and I can't see that much creativity in the LEGO medium at this point.

RTFA: It is built for LEGOLAND, you know....the theme park with huge structures built out of LEGO? This *is* what the theme park is about. It says it was built by a "team of professional Legoland model builders".
Again. PLEASE RTFA before you go on a rant about how these builders are "mindless consumers" and " just dropping money" it goes a bit far. They are professional builders *employed* by LEGO. RTFA RTFA RTFA.

@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M:
You'd still be looking at a price tag in the five-figure range to build that. Figure that based on the color scheme and Jesus' piece-count estimate you'd need well over 50k white 2x4 bricks, and Bricklink currently only shows ~30k at the moment, half of which are used (and likely a good portion of those are yellowed and would look disgusting in a construction of that scale). PaB is an option, but you're looking at $0.15 per brick. Plus you'd need a custom armature to keep it from collapsing. So, possible...just not the sort of thing that most people are going to be able to finance out of pocket. Also, consider that for the same price you could amass a potentially unprecedented army of over 3000 Stormtroopers. I ask you, which is a better use of your money? I mean, seriously. An army capable of galactic conquest...or an airplane.
And it's cool to hear that you're not just sticking to the official sets. There's too much potential in the medium that the set designers rarely, if ever, get to tap due to budget constraints.

They tend to round numbers off, like how the Millennium Falcon is "5000 pieces" when it's actually a little more than that. So we'll call it an "official estimate" and continue to be impressed with the sheer size of it. I've seen photos of how they do their design work, and they still do lifesize hand-plotted templates on graph paper, as compared to one fan's computer-generated design for the Stanford Bunny.

@davezatz:
That's why we now have iPods. When people ask me about my hobby, I show them a video I took by strapping my camera to a special LEGO train car and sending it around our unprecedentedly massive layout from the 2007 National Train Show (it's over three minutes long and even the long shot isn't far enough away to show the full height of Jim's 11.5' tall Penobscot building), and/or I show them photos of a certain Tiger that I once helped build (there was also a set of lifesize Snap/Crackle/Pop, and a 5' tall Froot Loops box built by fellow club members as part of the same commission, but Spencer, Jim and I only worked on Tony...which was more than enough challenge for three guys who'd never built large-scale sculptures before thankyouverymuch). Needless to say, I tend to not get teased about my hobby at work anymore.
@smashingparadox:
Matter is the building blocks of all LEGO. Don't think too hard about it or the universe might suffer catastrophic spontaneous existence failure.

You've never seen their pay scale, have you? Nathan Sawaya used to be a lawyer in Manhattan earning a six figure salary until he won a Masterbuilder recruitment contest. Then he moved to the Carlsbad area (midway between San Diego and L.A.) where he earned a starting wage of $13.50/hr (which is chump change for SoCal) for about nine months before quitting to become one of the first LEGO Certified Professional artists (basically a formally recognized freelance version of the official Master Builders). I hear he's able to charge enough for his work that he now earns more than he did as a lawyer (he earns enough to keep a studio in Manhattan now), but his post-LEGOLAND work is several shades of amazing. So, Masterbuilder may sound more prestigious, but a skilled LCP can afford to buy a girl a drink while explaining exactly what it is that he does for a living.
