AOL's Engadget Shuffles Editors As Ryan Block Leaves For Startup

|

ryan-block.jpgBig staffing changes coming to Engadget, AOL's top tech blog: Editor-in-chief Ryan Block is, as rumored, leaving in late August to launch a startup, and staffer Josh Topolsky will take his position.

Engadget Managing Editor Joshua Fruhlinger -- a candidate for Block's old job -- gets kicked upstairs; he'll be overseeing the AOL Tech network, which includes Engadget and its various spinoffs, and sites like Switched, The Unofficial Apple Weblog, and Download Squad.

Block says he'll continue to contribute to Engadget in an advisory role. His new gig? Not saying much yet, but he notes it "won't compete with Engadget." Really? TechCrunch's Michael Arrington reports that it'll be another content site "focusing on the consumer electronics space," involving Engadget co-founder Peter Rojas. Rojas is also working on RCRD LBL, a music JV with Downtown Records.

Update: Rojas confirms he'll be working on a "totally new project" with Block, but didn't include any more details.

Engadget is one of the most fun sites I've ever used. It does have some interesting news from time to time, but I really just like reading the comments. That site must attract the craziest, most brand fanatical people that ever cruised the web. Some of the articles are controversial or biased as to certain products and many lead to flaming.

I've been trying to peg the ages of the people that comment, and I figure they must be in high school or recent graduates. It's more like a high school schoolyard or a streetcorner. I'm usually doubled over from laughter when reading comments on Engadget. One of the strangest things Engadget has is a comment ranking system. Commenters use that ranking system like a pair of brass knuckles. If your opinion differs in the slightest from another member, you get so badly downranked it's pathetic. I guess it's a good way for some users to relieve frustrations.

Even after Ryan leaves I sure hope the site remains as entertaining as it is now. I better head over there now to see what craziness I've missed in an hour or so.
