Blizzard has always been a (the?) Mac-friendly game developer and they have now officially announced the forthcoming release of Diablo III. Nearly a decade after the last installment of the popular action-RPG, Blizzard plans a simultaneous release for Mac and PC (just like StarCraft II).As of yet the details, including release date and system requirements, are sketchy. However, the game will run a custom 3D graphics engine and return players to familiar territory and stories from Diablo II. I really think Blizzard deserves a hand for their commitment to bringing such A-list titles to the Mac day and date with the PC versions.

The woot: It's Diablo! And check out the small "abilties" videos for each of the two classes shown. The violence and audio are making me drool.
The weak: If you scour the web site, you'll see how light the details really are. At Blizzard's standard pace we won't be playing this until at least 2010.

Thank goodness for Blizzard, their support for mac over the years has been nothing short of legendary. I wish they'd just put everyone into finishing and releasing one of their next generation titles, like Starcraft 2 before getting frisky and announcing another one too! Can't wait to get my hands on either of them.

I was very excited to play some D2 after watching the D3 game play video. pulled out my D2 LoD boxed set, and installed it along with the latest 112a patch.
My excitement soon turned to frustration as D2 would crash on startup.
Seems 10.5.3 (or earlier?) pulled support for 256 color mode for nvdia GPUs thereby breaking D2 (and starcraft). I tried to play under parallels but it was too painful since it would not stretch to fill the screen.

Did they fix Starcraft (I) and Diablo (II) yet? Or will the fixes be SC2 and D3?

Fix what? I don't know much about D2, but SC is considered to be the most balanced, well rounded, dare I say perfect RTS out there...what's broken?

In terms of gameplay, yes, Diablo 2 and StarCraft are insanely good. I've played SC for years and years and I keep finding new, interesting strategies when I play with friends, and a good amount of them are viable.
They're broken because they use 256-color mode, and Apple removed 256-color mode in 10.5.3, and neither Apple nor Blizzard has released an update that lets the two games run.

just to clarify the reply above, there's only a problem with SC and D2 running on Macs with NVidia GPUs. Apple hasn't disabled 256 colour mode on ATI or Intel GPUs (I was running StarCraft this weekend under 10.5.3 on Macs with both these GPU types)
Puzzling that they should remove the mode from just one type of chip... hopefully they'll leave it alone in future releases

Maybe if "the" wasn't used in conjunction with the word "always." Some of us remember back when Bungie was THE Mac-first developer, and when the Myth series blew all the other RTS games, including those from Blizzard, out of the water. Marathon FTW!

Yeah, this is absolutely fantastic news, 3 cheers for Blizzard! Not only do they fully support the Mac, they actually put care and effort into the Mac version equal to the PC version! We know this won't be a repeat of C&C3, which runs like shit on even the fastest of Macs.
But I agree with some of the others, what are they thinking working on so many things at once? I understand they have to devote attention to WoW at all times, but why start working on Diablo, and according to them at least one unannounced project at the same time?
Dammit I want my Starcraft II! *cries like a baby*

Who cares about D2 not working, it's only 10 years old...D3 is coming and I've been waiting for this for so long...I hope it's not far off...the Mac platform has been starved of decent games for a long while. I need a new addiction...

I haven't anticipated a game this much since Diablo II came out. I wasted MONTHS learning about it before it's release. Now, years later, in my mid-20s, I'll be doing the exact same thing for this one. I wonder though, what it'll be like, if they'll introduce some MMO-esque crap like WoW or keep it pure. Also: Bill Roper's gone, so we'll see.

I loved the earlier games, so I'm sure I'll like this one, and the graphics don't look particularly taxing at the moment so I'm hopeful that it will run OK on my MBP. However, I'd buy this just to support continuing development on the Mac.
